The main shrine
literally means "Precious Hall of the Great Hero,"
which is the most important place within the Buddhist
monastery. It is dedicated to the founding master of
Buddhism, Sakyamuni Buddha who possesses the heroic quality of
unsurpassed wisdom, virtues, compassion, and the power to subdue
evils, thus saving all sentient beings from affliction and
ignorance.
Amitabha
Buddha
(on the left)
He is the teacher of the Western Pure Land. As a
Bodhisattva, he made forty-eight great vows. He has
established the Western Pure Land in order to receive sentient
beings who sincerely and repeatedly recite his name at the time
of their passing. At the Western Pure Land, devotees will
continue to receive the teachings of Buddha and Bodhisattvas
until their attainment of Buddhahood.
Sakyamuni
Buddha (in the
center)
Born in Northern India to the royal family of the Ksatriya caste
over two thousand five hundred years ago, his given name was
Siddhartha Gautama. At the age of twenty nine, he left his
family in search for the truth on human suffering from birth,
old age, sickness, and death. After spending six years, he
finally became enlightened to the law of "dependent
origination" and that everything is the direct result of
causes and conditions. Our existence in the world is
impermanent. It is only through the understanding of our
true self that we can be at peace within the concept of
"permanence, happiness, true nature, and purity."
After his enlightenment, Sakyamuni Buddha disseminated his
teachings for approximately 45 years, until his entering into
parinirvana (a conscious state of liberation) at the age of the
eighty.
