Hsi Lai Library

Venerable Master Hsing Yun, Founder of Fo Guang Shan, said:
“Reading can establish one’s image. Reading can change one’s temperament. Reading can better understand oneself. Reading can augment time and space.” With this concept in mind, Fo Guang Shan has set up libraries in the various branches around the world to promote the importance of reading to the general public and thus form a well-read community.

“Hsi Lai Library” is part of Hsi Lai Temple. Currently, there are nearly 10,000 books including Chinese and English books, magazines, audio tapes, VCDs, DVDs and other materials. We welcome the general public from the ten directions to come to the library to read and wander in the ocean of books.

Hsi Lai Library Policies

Reading can establish one’s image. Reading can change one’s temperament.
Reading can better understand oneself. Reading can augment time and space.
~Venerable Master Hsing Yun~

  1. We welcome the general public to the library, to read and wander in an ocean of books.

  2. Hours of Operation: Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Alternative hours may be posted during special temple events.)

  3. The library collections are open for browsing. However, there are two categories of library materials: Ones that can be “Checked Out” and others that are “Library Use Only.” “Library Use Only” includes all Chinese and English Buddhist canons/scriptures, reference books, and historical collections and archives. Such materials must remain in the library and cannot be checked out.

  4. How to apply for library privileges:
4.1 If you already have a “Fo Guang Card,” please fill out the Fo Guang Card Supplement: Hsi Lai Library Privileges Application Form. You may then use your Fo Guang Card to check out books.

4.2 If you don’t have a “Fo Guang Card,” or have an old library card, please apply for a “Fo Guang Card.” Before receiving your “Fo Guang Card,” you may use your driver’s license or other official ID as your temporary library card.

4.3 If you have an old library card, please follow the two steps outlined above. You will no longer be able to use your old library card, effective immediately.

  5. Check out policy for library materials: Members may borrow up to 3 items at a time. Every item has a loan period of 2 weeks.

  6. Item due dates can be extended once for one additional week via phone, email, or in-person (magazines cannot be extended).

  7. Your Fo Guang Card must be presented to check out library materials. Fo Guang Cards are not to be transferred or borrowed for check out purposes.

  8. The late fee for overdue items is $0.25/day/item. Patron borrowing privileges are suspended when fees total over $1.00. For any items over two weeks past due, suspensions will be extended beyond the return of items and payment of the fees, based on the number of days it took for overdue items to be returned and for all associated fees to be paid.

  9. Please secure and be considerate of all checked out library materials. If lost or damaged, fees will be assessed at market value.

  10. Please treat all library items with care. Do not shift, misplace, rip, or scribble on any items.

  11. In the “Reserved Area for Sutras,” the Buddhist sutra collections are precious. Please treat them with extra care: pick them up gently and avoid tearing or taking them outside of the room.

  12. Please make sure library items are checked out before using the “Outdoor Reading Area.”

  13. Upon entering the library, please refrain from making excessive noise, and dispose of trash appropriately. Speak softly if needed.

  14. Please do not bring food or beverages into the library. Water bottles or cups with lids are acceptable.

  15. Please do not put library items back on shelves after reading. Leave them on the book cart to be reshelved by library staff.

  16. Please do not enter the library if you are not properly and sufficiently attired.

  17. Policies are subject to change at the discretion of the library staff.
