Origins

Origins of the Water and Land Dharma Service

Emperor Wu of Liang dreamt of a monk who told him, “Beings in the Six Realms are experiencing limitless suffering. Should you wish to relieve these beings from their suffering, you should hold a Grand Offering to [Sentient Beings of] Water and Land Dharma Service to provide universal aid to such spirits.”

Emperor Wu of Liang then decreed that Chan Master Baozhi would look through the Buddhist scriptures to compile the Emperor Liang Precious Repentance of Kindness and Compassion. In the past, Ānanda had encountered a Ghost King named Burnt Face and began a ritual to bestow food equally to all beings. Using that method, he compiled a liturgy which was first conducted at Jinshan Monastery with Emperor Wu of Liang as the principal sponsor. As such, the earliest form of the Water and Dharma Service was initiated by the imperial court.

Today, it is initiated by ordinary devotees who each contribute resources to sponsor it. This is called a “multi-family Water and Land.” In the event that a single family aspires to sponsor it on their own, this is called a “single-family Water and Land.” A core tenet of Fo Guang Shan is to extensively form wholesome affinities, and so every time a Water and Land Dharma Service is held, it is hoped that a myriad of conditions will come together to make this Buddhist service possible. Thus, this is called a “myriad-condition Water and Land.”

of the Water and Land Dharma Service

The Water and Land Dharma Service is the most respected and meritorious service in Chinese Buddhism. Apart from offering meals to satisfy the needs of all sentient beings, it involves the recitation of sutras and mantras as an act of compassion, allowing sentient beings to open their minds and alleviate suffering.

The Water and Land Dharma Service is split into Inner and Outer Platforms. The Inner Platform is the main event. However, in terms of merit, it is equally necessary to conduct Dharma services in both Inner and Outer Platforms for merits to be complete and perfect.

Significance of the Water and Land Dharma Service

The Water and Land Dharma Service is the most elaborate and most meritorious Dharma service in Chinese Buddhism, and its name is often abbreviated to the Compassionate Offering Assembly, Water and Land Assembly, or Sanctuary of Water and Land. However, its full title is “Grand Banquet and Supreme Assembly of Sacred and Ordinary Beings in the Dharma Realms for the Universal Liberation of Sentient Beings from Water and Land,” and each part of this is significant.

Rituals of the Inner Platform

The Water and Land Liturgy, which compiles and honors the essence of the twelve divisions of the Buddhist canon, is considered the king of the Buddhist methods for repentance and liberating beings. It gathers the causes for liberation in order to aid and benefit both the living and deceased. The merits and virtues of liberation are truly inconceivable.

Rituals of the Outer Platforms

For seven days, the Outer Platforms conducts Dharma services, establishing six platforms to purify the karmic hindrances of sentient beings and enhance their merit, virtues, and wisdom. The six platforms are specifically designated as the Great Platform, Surangama Platform, Wondrous Lotus Platform, Various Sutras Platform, Pure Land Platform, and Avatamsaka Platform. In modern times, a Medicine Buddha Platform is sometimes added to pray for the well-being and blessings of the devotees and eradicate calamities.

Since its founding over thirty years ago, Fo Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple has worked tirelessly to spread the Buddha's teachings throughout the world. This is in earnest adherence to the vows of its Founding Master, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, “May the Buddha's light shine on the three thousand worlds and the Dharma stream flow to the five great continents!”

Hsi Lai Temple has been devoted to its mission of promoting education, cultural arts, charity, and teaching the Dharma to benefit all beings.
