In order to promote the Humanistic Buddhist ideals of purification and beauty, the 2016 Sounds of the Human Singing Competition was held in the temple auditorium by Buddha’s Light International Association on August 14. Venerable Directors Yishan and Mankuang, Ven. Manchao, BLIA Chapter President Jerry Chen, Vice Presidents Jason Tsai & Sharon Lin, and Senior Advisor Sharon Cheng, along with subchapter members and family totaling nearly 400 people were in attendance.
The competition was broken into individual and group divisions with 20 in the individual division and 6 groups totaling 120 people in the group division. Well-known Southern California chorus reviewers, Instructors Huang Jimei & Cai Shunu and also Lay Dharma Lecturer Zhang Naibin, were invited to evaluate the competition. Award winners in the Individual Division A were: champion – Du Ruizhu of Redondo Beach Subchapter, runner-up – Jiang Xiufen of PV Subchapter, and second runner-up – Liu Zhengmin of White Tower Subchapter. Award winners in the Individual Division B were: champion – Liu Qiuping of Monterey Park Subchapter, runner-up – Heather Sung of Hsi Lai Subchapter, and second runner-up Song Xinling of Hacienda Heights Subchapter. In the Group Division, Best Costume was awarded to San Gabriel Subchapter 2, Best Idea was awarded to Monterey Park Subchapter, Best Team was awarded to Walnut Subchapter, Three Acts of Goodness was awarded to White Tower Subchapter, Abbot’s Award was given to Rowland Heights Subchapter, and the Smart and Agile Award was given to FanYin Subchapter.
This year’s special performance groups included singing and recital by Arcadia Subchapter and singing of Sixth Patriarchs Sutra by Dajue Study Group. The event came to a close with encouragement from Chapter President Jerry Chen,
