Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club sponsored the 29th annual "I Love America" Independent Day parade. Along with 35 other neighborhood organizations, Hsi Lai Temple took part with its own parade float which featured cartoon inflatable and costumed monks. Abbot Ven. Huidong led a 108-member temple delegation composed of nuns, devotees, Taiwanese visitors, youths, students and Boy Scouts along the route from Colima Road to Simpson Park. Along with patriotic red-white-and-blue outfits, some wore traditional dresses from across Asia. Over 30 different booths were set up on site offering information, performances and food to spectators. In the past, Hsi Lai Temple's parade float had won first prize a total of three times.
Before the parade's start, distinguished guests Congressman Ed Royce and Supervisor Don Knabe posed for pictures in front of Hsi Lai's float. Also on the day before, coinciding with Jim Davis Beautification Day, volunteers from Hsi Lai Temple helped sweep and clean Colima Road in advance of the event.
