Hsi Lai Temple hosted a Baby Blessing Ceremony for children up to 6 years of age. Around 150 kids were registered for the event, along with 20 last minute registrants that same day. Numerous families and friends filled the main shrine to capacity. One mother said she brought her sick baby to the previous blessing, which helped with the recovery. So she advised three of her friends to enroll their children in this year's ceremony. Each child was presented with a Taking Refuge in Buddhism certificate, plus an individual Dharma name.
The afternoon was filled with exciting kid-friendly activities such as face-painting and making balloon animals. It's also the Chinese custom to lay different objects before a baby, to see what in particular catches his or her attention. The choice is said to predict lifelong interests and talents.
