To mark Fo Guang Shan’s 50th anniversary and Master Hsing Yun’s 90th birthday this year, Fo Guang Light Youth Symphony Orchestra plan to visit the main monastery in Taiwan from August 19-27. To raise the required travel funds, the 40-member orchestra held a fundraising concert at the Hsi Lai Temple. Over 200 tickets were sold.

Conductor Jorge Luis Uzcategui led the ensemble in playing classical pieces such as Pomp and Circumstance, Round Aus Dem Te Deum, Hungarian Dance No. 5, along with Taiwanese folk song Black Black Sky and Buddhist music Haromize..

At the event’s conclusion, principal monk Ven. Hui Hao spoke about the orchestra’s founding in 1993 based on Master Hsing Yun’s idea to use music to spread Buddhism regardless of different languages and backgrounds worldwide. Ven. Hui Hao also thanked the generous donors numbering almost a hundred.

When the concert finished, the entire audience applauded and shouted "Encore!" The orchestra obliged by performing one final Taiwanese folk melody.
