The Eight Precepts Retreat took place at Hsi Lai Temple on March 26 to 27, 2016. Nearly 140 preceptees attended the retreat to uphold one day and one night of pure precepts. After checking in early in the morning, the preceptees entered the Main Shrine and began their entire day of Buddhist practice, starting with precept ceremony and meditative lunch, followed by classes and other practices.
The Chinese classes include "Eight Precepts and Bodhisattva Path" taught by Abbot Ven. Hui Dong, "Practice in Daily Life" by Ven. Huifu, and "Meditation" instructed by Ven. Hui Shiuan. The classes in English include "Retreat & the Awakening" by Ven. Yi Chao and "Cultivation in Daily Life" by Ven. Youheng.
After the Medicinal Dinner, the preceptees experienced the pilgrimage with the public to celebrate the birthday of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. They sincerely chanted the Bodhisattva's name and prostrated every three steps, advancing from the Mountain Gate to the Main Shrine. Through pilgrimage, people can purify their body and mind.
The next Eight Precepts Retreat will be from May 28 to 29, 2016. People interested in this retreat may register online until two weeks before the event.
