A Visit by the Former Vice President of the Republic of China
October 3, 2016

Mr. Wu Den-yih, the former vice president of the Republic of China, visited Hsi Lai Temple on October 3. Welcoming Mr. Wu Den-yih for his visit were Ven. Abbot Hui Dong, Directors Ven. Hui Hao and Ven. Yi Shan, along with resident monastics, BLIA Los Angeles Chapter President Jerry Chen, and BLIA leaders Grace Chang, Sharon Chang, and Alex Wu, as well as a hundred BLIA members.

While giving a welcome speech, Ven. Abbot Hui Dong praised Mr. Wu Den-yih for keeping his word and honoring his promises. Two months ago, Mr. Wu went to Fo Guang Shan for Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s birthday and was introduced to Ven. Hui Dong. Mr. Wu promised to visit Hsi Lai Temple on his next trip to Los Angeles. When Mr. Wu and his party, Gao Qizheng, Liu Yongwen, and many other colleagues finally arrived at Hsi Lai Temple, Ven. Hui Dong showed them around and viewed a documentary introduction of the temple.

During the discussion panel, Mr. Wu said that the greatest goals of Buddhism are both to purify people’s minds and to make the world a brighter place. As part of the FGS community, Mr. Wu admires Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s effort to bring Taiwan-based FGS overseas and to Mainland China. With help from Mr. Wu Po-hsiung’s father, Wu Hong-lin, Venerable Master has managed to allow “the Buddha’s light to shine throughout the three thousand realms and for Dharma water to flow across the five great continents.” With his deep affinities with FGS, Mr. Wu has been to Motosu Temple in Japan, Nan Tien Temple in Australia, and Dajue Temple in Yixing. In addition, Mr. Wu has a special connection with Hsi Lai Temple: this is actually his third visit to the temple and he is already very familiar with the BLIA community.

Mr. Wu prayed before the Buddha for the blessing of Taiwan and world peace. During conversations with BLIA members, Mr. Wu expressed his gratitude for the chance to visit Hsi Lai as part of his visit to the United States.
