Fo Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple was recognized by the Southern California Association of Teachers with the “Outstanding Contribution Award” on March 23, 2016. Ven. Abbot Hui Dong received the award in San Dimas on behalf of the temple, accompanied by Social Education and Outreach Director Ven. Youheng and BLIA LA Chapter Vice President Alex Wu, in front of an audience of 180 people. Over the years, Hsi Lai Temple has strived to serve the local public schools and its dedications are highly affirmed.

The Southern California Association of Teachers consists of 42 different school districts, and every year, each school district presents awards to outstanding teachers, individuals or organizations that devote themselves to public education.

When Hacienda Heights Association of Teachers representative, Shawna Adam, presented the award of crystal globe to Ven. Abbot Hui Dong, she proclaimed that Hsi Lai Temple, recognized as the largest Buddhist temple in North America, has offered many cultural, educational and charitable resources to local people and has benefited many residents and students.

Hsi Lai Temple and BLIA LA Chapter have established “Winter Love Joy Scholarship” since 2004. Every year, they give away grants and school supplies to distinguished middle and high school students, all of whom are carefully selected by their teachers and schools. To date, over 2000 students have received that scholarship. Ven. Abbot Hui Dong explained that the goal of the “Winter Love Joy Scholarship” is to strengthen and support the community in public education, hoping that these young recipients will be even more enthusiastic to learn after being recognized by the society.
