STRATEGIC PSYCHOLOGY (EXCERPT)
by Su Xun (1009 - 1066, Song Dynasty)
English translation: William Chong

The way of a general starts
with disciplining one’s mind,
His expression does not change
in the face of Mt. Tai crumbling before him;
His sight does not waver
even as a strange moose appears to his left.
Then he can deal with the pros and cons;
then he is prepared to face the enemy.
Only by honing one’s skills while being untainted
will one be unequalled.
A moment of forbearance
can contend with a hundred instances of valor;
A moment of stillness
can overcome a flurry of activity.
