VERSE OF REPENTANCE
by Xuefeng Yunwen (Years unknown, Song Dynasty)
English translation: Miao Guang

Transgression arises from the mind,
Thus repentance should also begin from there;
Upon extinguishment of the mind,
Transgressions will also cease.
When both extinguishment and cessation are empty,
Repentance is thus in its truest form.
── from Dahui Pujue Chanshi Pushuo (Open Lectures of Chan Master Dajue Puhui)

PREVIOUS MIND, LATTER THOUGHT
by Tan Jing (Years unknown, Southern Qi Dynasty)
English translation: Miao Guang

When the previous mind has unwholesome thoughts;
It is like the cloud that covers the moon.
When the succeeding mind gives rise to wholesome thoughts;
It is like the torch that dispels darkness.
── from Weiceng You Yinyuan Jing (Sutra on Never-Existing Causes and Conditions)
