CHAPTER ON THE GUIDANCE OF SOLDIERS

Translated into Chinese by Jnanagupta (523 - 600, Sui Dynasty)
English translation: You Zai

Generosity accumulates great merits,
Forbearance eliminates all resentments,
Virtuous ones abandon all wrongdoings,
Being free from desires naturally leads to liberation.

── from Abhiniskramana Sutra (Sutra of the Collection of the Original Acts of the Buddha)

CULTIVATION OF GENEROSITY AND WISDOM

Aryasura, Translated into Chinese by Samghavarman (Years unknown, Song Dynasty)
English translation: You Zai

Those who cultivate wisdom but do not practice generosity will develop knowledge and intelligence but remain impoverished.

Those who practice generosity but do not cultivate wisdom will obtain great wealth but remain unlearned and ignorant.

The dual practice of generosity and wisdom will result in the attainment of both wealth and wisdom.

Those who cultivate neither will forever remain in the dark night, impoverished and ignorant.

── from Fenbie Yebao Lue Jing (Sutra on the Distinctive Karmic Retributions)
