MORALITY, CONCENTRATION, AND WISDOM

by Venerable Master Hsing Yun (1927 - , Fo Guang Shan)
English translation: Zhi Yue

Not recollecting the past is cultivating concentration;
Not fantasizing about the future is upholding the precepts;
Not being greedy in the present is cultivating wisdom.

Morality is the cure for unwholesome karma;
when in fear, the precepts can give us protection.

Meditation is the strength for body and mind;
when in danger, concentration can give us security.

Wisdom is the illumination for our future;
when in ignorance, insight can give us guidance.

── from Fo Guang Cai Gen Tan (Roots of Wisdom)

WHAT KIND OF PERSON SHOULD WE BE?
English translation: Fo Guang Shan International Translation Center

Like a mirror, reflect upon ourselves.
Like a briefcase, pick up and let go with ease.
Like a notebook, record all our successes and failures.
Like a candle, brighten up others’ lives.
Like a clock, keep track of and cherish every moment.
