SIX GUIDELINES ON LIVING

by Venerable Master Hsing Yun (1927 - , Fo Guang Shan)
English translation: Zhi Yue and Alex Madjar

Be expressive; Remember to smile.

Look upon others with compassion; And remember to care.

Speak kind words; Remember to praise.

Be of service; And remember to help.

Listen to wholesome speech;

Remember to distinguish between right and wrong.

Bless others with your heart; And remember to respect all.

THE WAY OF TEN CONTEMPLATIONS

Practice the Ten Contemplations upon waking;
offer an incense before going to bed.

Be mindful of the Five Contemplations while eating;
don’t fuss over gain or loss.

Don’t worry or distress;
speak good words upon meeting others.

Follow the causes and conditions regarding joy and sorrow;
don’t worry about birth, old age, sickness, and death.

Have a content heart and everywhere is a good place;
don’t bother too much about
whether a relationship is cold or hot.

Optimism brings carefreeness and ease;
don’t be afraid of power and authority.

Have good manners in all aspects of life;
don’t be pretentious with clothing and food.

Follow the Noble Eightfold Path when dealing with others;
compassion, kindness, joy, and equanimity are the most supreme.
