LETTING GO OF GAIN AND LOSS

by Venerable Master Hsing Yun (1927 - , Fo Guang Shan)
English translation: Man Ho

Gain and loss, suffering and happiness,
come from our past causes and conditions.

Goodwill opens the gateway to good luck.
Evil thought opens the gateway to hindrances.

Some will pass their examinations, some will fail.
Those who pass won’t necessarily succeed later,
and those who fail will be a failure.

Liberation means rising above honor and humiliation, slander and praise.

Detachment means rising above success and failure, gain and loss.

── from The Everlasting Light

English translation: FGS Nan Tien Temple Translation Committee

When competing, have the confidence that you are the best.

When losing, have the grace to admit that others are the best.

Only love can win love, and hatred cannot win love.

Only respect can win respect, and anger cannot win respect.
