HAPPY WAS THE WORLD: TO MOTHER

by Yu Guangzhong (1928 - )
English translation: Yu Guangzhong

Happy was the world

Where, when first we met,

You greeted me with a smile,

And I answered with a cry

That move heaven and earth.

Sad was the world

Where, when at last we parted,

I saw you off with a cry,

And you answered with a silence

That closed heaven and earth.

Strange was the world

Where, seeing you first to last,

I always cried aloud

How with your smile the world began

And how without it bliss ended.
