FAITH IN MIND (EXCERPT)

by Sengcan ( ? - 606, Sui Dynasty)
English translation: John Balcom

To reach the Way is not difficult,
One needs only have no preferences,
Just do not hate or love,
And you will fully understand.

The struggle between strife and ease
Is an illness of the mind;
Not understanding the profound objective,
Tranquility is practiced in vain.

Do not pursue preferences,
Do not abide in the patience of emptiness.
This kind of even mind
Fully and naturally ends affliction.

Just having right and wrong
Creates confusion, and you will lose your mind.
The six sense objects are not unwholesome,
They are the same as enlightenment.

Dreams, illusions, sky flowers,
Why bother holding on to them?
Gain, loss, right, wrong,
It is time to let them go. ──
