GREEN PINE AND FLOWERS

by Liu Ji (1311 - 1375, Ming Dynasty)
English translation: Miao Guang

Good is like the pine, and evil the flower,

At one glance the latter may seem lesser;

Until the day when both are slashed by frost,

All that is left is the pine, not the flower.

── from Hsing Yun Shuo Ji (Hsing Yun’s Commentaries on Verses)

GOOD AND BAD RETRIBUTIONS
by Wu Cheng'en (1500 - 1582, Ming Dynasty)
English translation: Miao Guang

Every thought that arises in the mind is detected by Heaven and Earth.

If good and evil are without retribution,

then the universe must be other than impartial.

── from Xi You Ji (Journey to the West)

FOR XIAO YU
by Li Shimin (599 - 649, Tang Dynasty)
English translation: Miao Guang

Storms will test a grass’s strength,

Chaos will reveal a minister’s loyalty,

Is the courageous always mindful of righteousness?

A wise one will certainly possess benevolence.

── from Quan Tang Shi (Complete Collection of Tang Poems)
