SEPARATION FROM WORLDLY PASSIONS
by Huangbo Xiyun ( ? - 850, Tang Dynasty)
English translation: Sasha Lyapina

Separation from worldly passions is an extraordinary task,
Grab the head of rope and tie it with all your might;
If not for the bone-biting winter cold,
How can the plum blossom and its fragrance assail the nostrils?

── from Wanglin Lu (Wanglin Record)

HANDS FREE FROM WORLDLY MATTERS
English translation: Zhi Yue

The mind is as boundless as the ocean;
widely plant pure lotuses to cultivate the body and mind.
Naturally a pair of hands free from worldly matters,
will serve as a person of compassion for the world.

── from Biyan Lu (Blue Cliff Record)

WONDROUS
by Dongshan Liangjie (807 - 869, Tang Dynasty)
English translation: Miao Guang and Sasha Lyapina

O, wondrous! Wondrous!
The insentient expound the Dharma, inconceivable,
If you use your ears to listen,
eventually it is difficult to comprehend;
Place your eyes in the direction of the sound,
for understanding to finally be attained.

NEVER SEEK FROM ANOTHER
English translation: Miao Guang and Sasha Lyapinas

Never seek from the without,
The self will only be further distanced;
As I set out on my own,
I encounter channels everywhere.
The channel now becomes me,
Yet I am not the channel; Such the way I must understand it all,
In order to accord with the Thusness.

── from Dongshan Liangjie Chanshi Yulu (Record of Liangjie of Dongshan)
