SETTING OUT ON THE YANGTZE RIVER:
FOR SECRETARY MR. YUAN
Mournful it is to part from friends and kin,
Drifting as my vessel enters the mist;
With oars set to return for Luoyang,
The bells toll from the trees of Guanglin.
Today, the morning marks our farewell─
When and where shall we meet again?
The affairs of the world like a boat in waves,
Pushed by the current─where is there to stay?
AN AUTUMN NIGHT MESSAGE TO SECRETARY QIU
Thinking of you on this autumn night,
As I walk in the cool air, singing my poem,
Pinecones falling upon an empty mountain,
My secluded friend is perhaps not yet asleep.
FOR THE MOUNTAIN HERMIT OF QUANJIAO
Today, it is cold inside this quiet prefecture,
Sudden thoughts of the mountain hermit arise.
Bundling up thorn twigs at the end of the ravine,
To return home and boil the white rocks.
I long to carry a gourd filled with wine,
As comfort for that far windy and rainy night.
Yet this deserted mountain is full of fallen leaves,
Where might I find traces of you?
TO LI DAN AND YUAN XI
Last year we met and parted amidst the blossoms,
Another year gone,
flowers have bloomed again.
Worldly affairs are so vast and hard to manage,
A sadness in spring,
the gloominess of sleeping alone in darkness.
With a body covered in illness,
I think of the fields,
Exiles within the precinct shames me of my pay.
Upon the question, “Come and have an exchange?”
How many full moons are there to witness
from the Western Pavilion?
