Buddha's Light Youth Symphony Orchestra
The Buddha's Light Youth Symphony Orchestra of Hsi Lai Temple was established in 1993.  The purpose for establishing this orchestra is to "use the dharma sound to transport ten thousand souls" and "use the power of music to break ten thousand karma links."  We meant to rely on the beauty of Buddhist music to overcome racism and to dissolve national boundaries.  We aim to use western musical instruments to interpret traditional dharma chanting and modern dharma sound.  By using the techniques of symphonic performance, we hope to spread the joy of Buddhism.  In addition, it provides another outlet for youths and adds to their choice of activities.  Maybe just maybe, the serenity of Buddhist music would also calm people's spirit, defuse the violence in our society, and help make the world a better place.
Besides the annual Spring the Fall concerts, Buddha's Light Youth Symphony Orchestra also participates in various community activities.  It performed for many years at the Anti-drug program sponsored by the "Asian Pacific Family Center."  It set a good example for the young people and won praise from far and wide.  It's been invited to take part in many Buddhist concerts and to perform at the annual "World wide Peace and Prosperity Dharma Service."  In 1998, the orchestra performed in front of tourists from worldwide at the Disneyland.
By performing to a worldwide audience, it truly transcended the limitation of space.
